Are You Cyber Empowered?

Are You Cyber Empowered?

This is a question anyone can ask and should be asking on behalf of themselves and within your organizations. However, we often view cybersecurity through the lens of feeling vulnerable. -           How do I know what I need to do? Isn’t my antivirus software enough? -           What happens if I get hacked? -           Who can I turn to help? -           Can I even afford this? These and some of the many questions most organizations ask as they navigate the world of cybersecurity. However, these questions leave us feeling unmotivated and dis-empowered. The goal of engaging in cybersecurity is the opposite. Brene Brown, an internationally recognized author and TED talk presenter on emotional vulnerability stated the following:  “ Only when we’re brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” My challenge to you is to seek the light. Cybersecurity seeks to view it not from a place of fear but empowerment. I challenge you to the following three goals: 1.     Do something every day to educate yourself and become aware of cybersecurity risks that affect your life and the lives of those around you. 2.     Make and form new habits that support security. One can turn on the second authentication factor for all your sensitive accounts. 3.     Learn your cyber risks. Many free resources are available to help you get the information you need to know what needs to happen to protect yourself and your organization.
This is just a start to moving toward the goal of being cyber-empowered. In this world of connectivity through the internet, our world is getting smaller. We can do things we never dreamed of and reach out and connect with people halfway around the globe in seconds. However, with great opportunity comes great responsibility, and as digital citizens, we need to feel empowered to protect that which brings us together.   I’ve enclosed a few resources to help you to get and feel cyber empowered.   Thank you for reading and until our next edition, stay safe… "We are One"   Resources:   Free Cybersecurity Risk Assessment - https://risks.covenantsec.io/

The Insider threat in cybersecurity is a tricky subject. We often don't want to approach it because, as the name says, this is someone we have given our trust to that frankly can't be trusted. However, this week we talk about cybersecurity from this angle. The internet village we all share requires us to share and trust in ways we never expected.

I had planned to share a wonderfully done newsletter article but opted to share from the heart. I've been truly blessed and honored to be in the security community for over 20 years and have many colleagues and friends who help secure our physical and virtual world. While I admit I love the work from home and the ability to order groceries online, I wouldn't say I like watching children bullied, the elderly targeted and pensions stolen, charities losing donations, and companies going out of business due to the insecurity of our global internet village. It was out of this place that I realized that we needed to reignite a fundamental truth that "We Are One" always connected.
